Upcoming Monthly
Meeting - Thursday,
September 2, 2010: "Homestead Records Plus: Online Records for Finding and Mapping Your Ancestor's Land Claim", Dayna Jacobs
Between 1863-1986 2 million claims were filed under the Homestead Act, and as early as 1788 the first patent for federal land was issued to an individual. Up to 90 percent of all adult white males in the U.S. owned land by the 1850s. Land entry files, surveys, and tract books can be rich sources of genealogy. This presentation will provide step-by-step instruction for obtaining these files via the BLM.gov and NARA.gov websites, and pinpointing the exact location of your ancestor's land on Google Earth.
Dayna Jacobs currently serves on the Board of the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen) coordinating their grant program for cemetery record modernization and digitization, and presenting a class in Mountain West States Research at their annual conference. She has been researching and teaching for twenty years and has participated in the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy four years, including training in Archives and Libraries, United States Methodologies, Computer Genealogy, and Mountain West States Research. Dayna is Assistant Director at the Monterey Family History Center over patron research services and staff training.

Everyone is welcome.
- Future General Monthly Meetings for 2010:
October 7, 2010 --
"Social Networking for Genealogists -- Facebook as a Research Tool", Madaleine
Laird
Facebook is a social networking site that many people use to keep in
touch with family, friends, and professional colleagues. Genealogists
have flocked to Facebook and use it to find distant cousins, display
family photographs, and meet others who share their interest in family
history. Learn more about what Facebook is and how it fits into your
genealogical research efforts!
After studying library and information science at UCLA, Madaleine
Laird turned a passion for genealogy into a profession. Madaleine
works for FamilyLink, the company behind GenealogyWise and
WorldVitalRecords. She has attended the Institute of Genealogy and
Historical Research at Samford University for two years running and
currently serves as Secretary of the California State Genealogical
Alliance. Her work experience in public and academic libraries has
proven to be an asset in doing genealogical research, and her Air
Force career as an Arabic cryptologic linguist led her to develop a
special interest in military records.
November 4, 2010: "Courthouse Records in Cyberspace", Junel Davidsen
Courthouse and other local records are at the center of family history research. Learn about the extensive record collections and free information becoming available through the websites of forward-thinking public officials. Some sites have indexes ‘building back’ from recent dates or lists of archival holdings, while others have digitized images from the ‘year dot.’ Prepare to search local records across the United States in a new and different way!
Junel Davidsen, a Certified Genealogist, has an AA in Family History Studies and served as President of the Monterey County Genealogy Society, 2008-09.
